Coming out of nowhere, Iceland took 2nd place in 2009 with a ballad.
When this song appeared, Iceland was trying to emerge from an absolutely crushing recession. If this song came first instead of second in Moscow, it would have been a giant boost for Iceland to stage the contest at that time. Well, at any time, really - poor Iceland has never won. Think of the interval act.... whale hunters harpooning animals on stage, Björk speaking in tongues, the bankers who caused the financial crisis shot live on stage - it would have been magical. Anyway...
Here are the results of the 12Points jury - is it true that we loved this song?
Song/Lyrics - 12/12
This was a well deserved placing for Iceland in the contest. If I heard this on the radio as a stand-along song, without ESC involvement, it would have been an instant favourite. Why? Because the lyrics are SO moving, and combine that with some sad strings in the background and you create an instant favourite that deserves recognition. And to think, Johanna was only 18 when she appeared here.
Performance - 12/12
Spot on. Not showy at all - it was all abou the song. Such great control in that voice.
Choreography (including Arm-ography and Hair-ography) - 8/12
This song is all about classic ESC arm-ography. It is so effective that one hand move after the first chorus got a close up (see 1.02 in this video). Now that is something.
Key Change Effectiveness - 12/12
The perfect kind of key change, a move up a key while a single note is being held. Eurovision gold!
Camp Factor - 6/12
A song like this isn't going to be too over the top - ballads tend to be a bit more relaxed. However, Johanna's choice of dress from the live Disney version of THE LITTLE MERMAID gives her a few points.
TOTAL: 50/60. A good score for a great song. Johanna tried again in 2011 with a really gorgeous new attempt to get into ESC that year, but didn't get out of the final. It's worth watching the video, which is below.
