Although this year there were no rumors about a possible withdrawal, there was no official confirmation, but this morning we got it: Spain will be in Copenhagen next year

It seems that TVE decided to wait until the last week of inscriptions (the due date is this Friday 22nd November) to confirm that they will be in next year’s Contest. In 2014 Spain will compete for the 54th time in the Eurovision Song Contest in a row.

Since there was no official confirmation until this morning, there have been not many serious rumors about potential candidates to represent Spain next year. However, there are/were several rumors on the internet and Eurovision forums about who could (even should) represent Spain in Copenhagen:

  • Roser Murillo: She is 34 and comes from Canet de Mar (Barcelona). She has been for many years (since she became famous in 2002) a potential candidate to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest. Her role in TVE’s talent show Uno de los nuestros as member of the jury is for many fans a proof that she could be one of the candidates.

  • Uno de los nuestros: This talent show is aired on TVE1 on Saturday night. Many fans said that this could be a "covered” National Final for Eurovision but the producer of this show has denied those rumors, although he said that “maybe TVE could choose the winner of the show for the Eurovision Song Contest, but that’s not the goal of Uno de los nuestros”.

  • Operación Triunfo: Early this summer there were surprising rumors from TVE about the possibility to have Operación Triunfo back as Eurovision preselection. However, in the end it did not happen and it will not happen since it is too late to organize such a show.

  • Chenoa: One of the “eternal candidates” to represent Spain has showed interest many times on the Eurovision Song Contest but during an interview this summer she said “in the end it is all about politics”. Maybe she is not that interested anymore…

  • Roko: This 24 year old singer and actress from Alcalá la Real (Jaén-Andalusia) was chosen by the Eurovision fans in the yearly poll of the website www.eurovision-spain.com as the “perfect candidate” to represent Spain in the ESC. However, she said that “she liked the idea” but “this is not the right moment” since she has an exclusivity contract with the private channel Antena 3, where she works at the moment.

  • Unknown artist: According to a recent article on the Spanish newspaper ABC.es, there are no popular artists interested in representing Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest anymore after ESDM’s debacle in Malmö. Only “young emerging artists” would be interested.

TVE has not revealed yet how and when will the artist be chosen. Most probably we will have to wait again until December to have all the details, or maybe a name directly. Internal selection like in 2012 and 2013? Or maybe a National Final with several artists after ESDM’s bad result?

We hope that Spain makes the right choice since this country has only been twice in the top 10 since 2004 and is not in the top 5 since 1995. It is time to make it to the top. The fans cannot wait anymore.

In 2001, in Copenhagen as well, Spain got a respectable 6th place with David Civera and “Dile que la quiero”, and 2 years ago they seemed to be in the right track with Quédate conmigo in Baku. Hopefully we will have another memorable Spanish entry again in 2014!
