Once a year liguistic minorities from all over Europe meet somewhere in Europe to showcase their cultural heritage. The contest known as Liet International once started out as a local contest in the Dutch province of Friesland and now is important for many minorities all over Europe, that contribute with songs in languages you might not even ever have heard of.
The Samí in Northern Scandinavia already selected their entry at the Samí Grand Prix that was held in Kautokeino, the Frisians selected theirs at Liet in Leeuwarden (or Ljouwert as they call it themselves) and the Asturians, in Northern Spain also had their own contest.
These artists will be joined by yet a few winners from regional contests that still have to be held, as well as five songs that have been selected by an international jury. Out of 40 submitted songs in 20 languages the jury selected Noid (Carelia), Silent Woo Goore (Udmurt / Russian Federation), Manam (Scotland), Siroka (Basque country) and Aoife Scott (Ireland).
A total of 10 contestanten will be in the race for winning this year's edition of Liet International on 19 November in Udine, in the Friûl region in North eastern Italy. More information can be obtained on the official website.
Last years contest was won by Orka, from the Faroe Islands (Jury award) and R.Esistance from Friûl (Public award).
