The United Kingdom had another internal selection this year. After last year's disappointing result with Molly's 'Children of the Universe', this year the BBC hopes Electro Velvet, consisting of singers Alex Larke and Bianca Nicholas, will do better with their song 'Still in Love With You'. They were in Amsterdam last weekend for the Eurovision in Concert promotion event.
"It's so much fun, it flies by", Bianca tells us when we briefly speak to her and Alex about Eurovision and how the BBC got in touch with them. "It was an open selection process. There were around 300 entries and we were the lucky chosen ones. It's an honor to be taking part." Alex adds: "It was actually the songwriter, a mutual friend of ours called David Mindel, who submitted the song."
Did they have any thoughts of going to Eurovision before this year? Alex: "No. David wrote the song and came up with it, and it felt so perfect for the competition that when he said 'I'm gonna enter it' we said 'Wow, let's do it'. And all of a sudden it was a success and we got through. It's been a whirlwind, really, for us." Bianca: "Eurovision is something that you watch when you're small, with your family. It's not something that I dreamed to be taking part in, but I'm very proud and honored to be doing it."
The first and last time Eurovision was being hosted in Vienna, in 1967, Sandie Shaw won for the United Kingdom. Does that bring any extra pressure? Bianca: "Not extra pressure but I hope that maybe it's a good luck charm. Hopefully we can repeat the feat." Barefoot? Alex: "No! You don't want the smell", he laughs. "And I'm only 4ft 11 so I need some very big heels", Bianca adds with a smile. And off they go, to the next interview.
Electro Velvet will perform directly in the Final with the song 'Still in Love With You'. Good luck!
